Mental Illness: End the Stigma

June 8, 2018July 9, 2018Leave a comment

I’ve never felt weak or embarrassed for needing anti-inflammatories or pain killers or days off for my ankles to heal, so why should we feel that way if we need medicine or days off for our minds?

I’m Johanna, the 5 to 9 Nomad.

Like most millennials, I’m a typical 9 to 5 office worker always dreaming about my next adventure. But unlike most, I love my job too much to actually leave it. So I like to think of myself as a 5 to 9 nomad; backpacking, traveling, and exploring as much as I can once I’m off the clock. And this blog is my way to document my adventures.

Lisa and I drove to Florida ☀️ this weekend to attend what has become my mother’s fifth child the last couple years - the second annual @swflmetsquerade. 💚💗💙 Last year she raised about $90k. This year she raised over $155,000 all for #MetastaticBreastCancer research! 🙀🙀 So many people say it, and they are so right: my mom is freaking Wonder Woman. 🦸🏼‍♀️ Even while she’s been getting chemotherapy and living with more cancerous tumors in her body than any human should have to live with, she devotes any and all (healthy) free time to her family, friends, and fundraising for #MBC. 💙💗💚 I’m so proud to be her daughter and I’m even more excited to host the First Annual Houston Metsquerade this November now! But also a little nervous since I’ve got some rather large shoes to fill 😅👠
I call myself the #FivetoNineNomad because I love traveling but I also love my job 🚀 and I don’t want to give it up to try my hand at being a full-time nomad 🏕 — Unfortunately, because of the government shutdown (which is now officially the longest shutdown in US history) I can’t do either ❌❌ I’m considered a “non-exempted” employee, meaning my position is not essential to support critical safety and security operations for the US government. It’s actually illegal for me to do any work.🚫 — You’d think that during a #governmentshutdown it’d be a great time to vacation 🏝 and enjoy my “time off” without wasting my annual leave 🏔 But, as a result of not being allowed to work I’m also not getting paid 💰💰 along with 800,000 federal employees. So I’ve trimmed my spending to cover the essentials and super cheap entertainment. — I’ve still been trying to make the most of this shutdown by reading 📚 and writing 💻 and finding free and cheap things to do in #Houston. And today I had the chance to do something really meaningful. — I stood in solidarity with NASA employees, TSA agents, union members, students and interns, and other hardworking #Americans as we protested the furlough and asked #congress to take action to end this #shutdown. Hopefully our voices will be heard and this shutdown will end soon. But if not, you can catch me at the next #rally which will be organized by the Houston @afgeunion.
Making the most of this #shutdown-induced extended vacay while I drive back to #Houston from #NewYork 🗽⛸
We had to call it quits a few miles south of the #MasonDixonLine due to weather and an upper respiratory infection. 🤒⛈ But the last four days (and ~40 miles) on the #AT were still some of the raddest days of 2018. Got to experience some incredible views and I learned quite a bit about myself. Already planning my next backpacking trip! 🏕⛴
Made it to Harper’s Ferry, one of the most popular points along the #AT ⛴ and home to the @appalachiantrail Conservancy ⛰ Due to the government shutdown the #ATC is closed but the trails are still open. 🛤 So my little sister and I are about to spend 6 days hiking the West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania back-countries! 🏕
Merry Christmas!! 🎁🎄 I hope y’all are enjoying the holiday with the people you love and lots of socks in your stockings! 🧦 And remembering the reason for the season! ✝️ Our savior was born just so He could die for our sins, making the most ultimate sacrifice so we can have everlasting life. ❤️❤️ God is good and so is this life. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Happy Everything! ✨🌟
Pro [road]tip: I got a sleeping bag from Wally World for $10 a couple years ago and I leave it in my trunk for whenever I go on long drives. 🛣 Saves time and money because all ya need is a gas station (I usually look for a @lovestravelstops) and you’re good for the night. 🚘🛢⛽️ Plus, you get to add an “experience” to your road trip ☺️😅 I’ve been making the drive from Texas to Florida multiple times a year for over five years now and I’ve only been killed twice. So give it a try! 🚗💤
New adventures coming soon 🏔 ❄️🐻
Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt🌵☀️⛰ {John Muir}
Lesson learned: zippered up fabric coolers are not secure against Texas wildlife 🐺🐿🐾
When was the last time you did something that scared 😱 you? Tell me about it!! ⬇️⬇️
I’ve traveled the world. 🌍 I’ve climbed mountains. ⛰ I’ve accomplished my childhood dreams and then some. ✨ And I know I can accomplish everything else headed my way; even when I sometimes feel alone. Because I know I’m never truly alone. 💙 “I can accomplish all things through Christ who strengthens me.” :Philippians 4:13 ✝️ #bigbendnationalpark #nationalparks 📸: @lah_ris_ahhh
